Deborah Kerr

Kristian Purcell
The following is left in English as proper nouns and titles that may be internationally recognized:
Born in 1979, Kristian Purcell is an artist and teacher based in Bedford, UK, whose practice explores the figure through the language of cinema, photography and art history. His paintings and drawings draw upon archival imagery from film and theatre, particularly the visual culture of early cinema and Hollywood’s Golden Age, alongside photographs and contemporary subjects.
Purcell’s longstanding engagement with collections and curatorial practice, developed through his work with The Higgins Art Gallery and Museum in Bedford, informs an approach in which historical imagery becomes a starting point rather than an endpoint. His figures are rarely conventional portraits. Instead, they occupy an ambiguous space between character, memory and imagined identity, with gesture, light and colour used to suggest an emotional narrative beyond the image itself.
Cinematic light and shadow are central to his practice. Working through layered applications of paint, Purcell has developed a distinctive palette of blues and greens, allowing faces and figures to emerge gradually from atmospheric fields of colour. His recent work increasingly embraces ambiguity and mystery, using archival and self-generated photography as a means of exploring how images can be transformed through painting.
Alongside his studio practice, Purcell has worked as an illustrator and curator, and was co-author and illustrator of Doom Towns: People & Landscape of Atomic Testing, published by Oxford University Press. His work has been exhibited in the UK and internationally, including at the Royal Academy in London, the National Atomic Testing Museum in Las Vegas and exhibitions across Bedfordshire.
