Teapot of cylindrical slightly waisted form, equipped with a long curved pouring spout and a removable circular lid. The vessel is completed by a mobile metal handle, attached to two pierced fittings on the shoulder and partially wrapped in a twisted purple textile cord.
The porcelain is adorned with an abundant polychrome decoration characteristic of Canton productions, executed in the Rose Family palette. On a densely foliated background, floral motifs and ornamental reserves stand out from large oval cartouches alternating scenes of figures indoors or on terraces and compositions of flowers and birds. Circular medallions populated with birds among the peonies rhythm the composition as well.
The decoration combines pinks, greens, turquoise, blue, orange-red and yellow, enhanced by fine dark outlines and gilded details. The shoulder is divided into trapezoidal reserves alternating between figures and floral bouquets. The lid repeats the same decorative vocabulary, with a central floral composition surrounded by a border of flowers and foliage.
The profusion of decoration, the cartouche organization, the simultaneous presence of figures, birds, butterflies and peonies, as well as the vividly contrasted palette are characteristic of Canton porcelains produced in the 19th century, notably for export markets. The functional form, combining porcelain and an articulated metal handle, belongs to a category of containers intended for serving and transporting hot beverages.
