Planorum, ac solidorum Euclidis Elementa.

EUCLID – Geminiano Rondelli
Planorum, ac solidorum Euclidis Elementa. Facilioribus Auctorum demonstrationibus a Hiemyniano Rondelli Philosophiae Doct. in Universali Studio Bononiae Scientiarum Mathemat. de mane Professore explicata, ac Illustrissimis atque Amplissimis Senatus Bononien. Patribus consecrata.
Bononiae [Bologna], apud Longum, 1693.
An interesting seventeenth-century Bologna edition of Euclid’s Elements, edited, commented upon and illustrated by the mathematician Geminiano Rondelli (1652–1735), professor of mathematics at the University of Bologna.
A work devoted to plane and solid geometry, richly illustrated throughout with numerous woodcut geometrical diagrams and figures, accompanying the definitions, propositions and demonstrations.
The illustrative apparatus is completed by six large folding geometrical plates (Tab. I–VI), all present.
Title page with the arms of the Senate of Bologna. At the end of the volume is a large woodcut device depicting Hercules and the Hydra.
Collation of this copy has been checked: 4 preliminary leaves; gatherings A–Z, Aa–Bb, all complete; 395 numbered pages, followed by final unnumbered pages. All six folding geometrical plates (Tab. I–VI) are present. Complete copy.
Contemporary full stiff vellum binding, with manuscript title on the spine. The copy has undergone a conservative restoration, including consolidation of the binding and reattachment of the text block to the original covers. The original vellum and historic components of the binding have been preserved; this is not a modern rebinding.
During conservation, a bookplate formerly attached to the front pastedown was removed because its pigment was transferring onto the paper. Light reddish traces from the former bookplate remain visible, together with early manuscript ownership notes.
The vellum shows natural signs of age, light rubbing, staining and minor marginal defects. Internally, the paper is generally well preserved, with occasional browning, staining and small age-related marks. A few minor marginal defects. Text, diagrams and illustrations remain clear and legible.
The six folding geometrical plates are complete and well preserved, showing the usual folds and only minor signs of handling.
A genuine and complete copy of this interesting seventeenth-century Bologna edition of Euclid, particularly attractive for its contemporary vellum binding, its very rich series of woodcut geometrical diagrams throughout the text, and the presence of all six folding plates.
Photos are part of the description.
