賣家描述
Lobi Figural Pipe - Doropo Region, Côte d’Ivoire, incl stand.
This small wooden sculpture combines a human figure and a utilitarian object into a single, cohesive form. An upright female figure with a rounded head, finely sculpted features, and suggested breasts is defined by an elongated body. One arm rests at her side, the other is held in front of her abdomen. Two larger hollows open at the bottom, indicating the piece's function as a pipe. The warm brown, occasionally glossy patina, along with signs of wear and minor cracks, testifies to repeated use. The interplay between the meticulously crafted face and the functionally openwork body lends the object the character of a miniature sculpture.
Doropo is located in northeastern Côte d’Ivoire, within the transboundary cultural area of the Lobi people and related groups, which extends into Burkina Faso and Ghana. Anthropomorphically shaped wooden pipes are documented from this context, but their precise symbolic meaning remains insufficiently researched. A Lobi pipe documented in a museum also possesses a human-shaped body and lateral clay openings; research explicitly emphasizes that the deeper meaning of such forms cannot be definitively determined. The present piece should therefore not be hastily labeled a bateba or protective figure.
Literature (selection):
Hans Himmelheber: “Figures and Carving Techniques among the Lobi,” Tribus 15, 1966.
Piet Meyer: Art and Religion of the Lobi. Zurich 1981.
Klaus Schneider: Crafts and Material Culture of the Lobi in Burkina Faso. Stuttgart 1990.
