It holds f/2.8 across the whole range, so exposure and depth of field stay put as you zoom, and it has a macro setting at the 35mm end that focuses to 24cm. The optics are the reason people still buy it: it is sharp wide open and renders with the character of that generation of Nikkor glass. On a DX body it becomes a 53-105mm portrait zoom.
