Ancient Egyptian

Provenance:

Collection passed on to me by mother (P.M.Shaw) in 2009
Given to her by
J.G.Judd who acquired the piece part of a strand of many depictions and amulets from Cairo dealer 18-06-1975. - with copy of original invoice available.

International Signed and Tracked.

This large Egyptian turquoise faience amulet depicts the goddess Isis suckling her infant son, Horus. This iconographic type is traditionally known as Isis Lactans.

Visual & Iconographic Analysis

• The Figure of Isis: The goddess is shown seated on a low-backed throne. She wears a tripartite wig surmounted by her characteristic throne-shaped crown, which represents her name in hieroglyphs (Aset). With one hand, she gestures toward her breast to nurse her child, embodying her fundamental role as the divine, protective mother.

• The Figure of Horus: The infant god Horus is cradled on his mother's lap. Following ancient Egyptian conventions for representing childhood, he is depicted naked and features the distinctive side-lock of youth.

• The Throne Detail: The back and sides of the throne show remnants of an impressed scale or lattice-like geometric pattern, typical of high-quality faience amulets from the New Kingdom to the Ptolemaic Period.

Condition & Material Integrity

• Material: The object is crafted from Egyptian faience, a quartz-based ceramic glazed with a copper-rich turquoise-blue coating.

• Surface Cracking (Craquelure): The piece displays a dense network of surface fractures extending across the body, limbs, and the side of the throne. This type of cracking is an expected aging characteristic of faience. It occurs over centuries due to core expansion, structural stress, or minor shifts in the underlying body composition.

Structural Stability:

Despite the widespread surface weathering and cracks, the artifact remains structurally intact. There is no significant loss of material, deep deep-seated separation, or major breakage along the core contours. The base, back pillar, and extended legs remain firmly unified, preserving the piece's complete form.

Microscopic images have been added to display pigmentation and integrity of the core faience.
