Vintage Japanese Wooden Tanuki Folk Art Collection – 5-Piece Set
Showa Era, estimated c.1960s–1970s
A charming collection of five vintage Japanese wooden tanuki (Japanese raccoon dog) folk-art pieces, believed to date from the Showa period.
The collection consists of:
• 2 large wooden lucky tanuki figures wearing traditional broad hats and carrying small sake flasks
• 1 wooden Bunbuku Chagama (tanuki tea-kettle) ornament on a wooden display base
• 2 miniature wooden tanuki folk dolls
The two larger tanuki figures are especially attractive examples of vintage Japanese souvenir folk craft. Their rounded wooden bodies retain prominent natural wood grain, while their faces, hats, feet and other details are individually formed and decorated. Each carries a small white sake flask and wears decorative cords and tassels.
Tanuki have long been popular lucky motifs in Japan and are particularly associated with prosperity, good fortune and success in business. Traditional lucky tanuki are often depicted with a hat, sake flask and other symbolic accessories.
The Bunbuku Chagama piece represents the famous Japanese folktale of the tanuki and the magical tea kettle. Bunbuku Chagama is closely associated with Morinji Temple in Tatebayashi, Gunma Prefecture, and has long been a familiar subject in Japanese folk culture.
The wooden tea-kettle ornament has a removable lid and a long handle. A tanuki head appears from one side of the kettle, creating a particularly humorous and distinctive interpretation of the traditional story.
Please note that a small accessory, believed to have originally been a ladle, is missing from the Bunbuku Chagama display. The small fitting on the wooden base remains.
The two miniature tanuki dolls are only a few centimeters high and have individually painted faces and clothing, giving them the appearance of tiny kokeshi-style folk dolls.
Research into comparable surviving examples suggests that wooden tanuki figures of this general type were sold as souvenir folk crafts at Japanese tourist destinations and hot-spring resorts during the Showa period. Similar surviving examples are known from Japanese resort areas.
However, no maker's mark, workshop name or definitive place of manufacture has been identified on this particular collection. Therefore, the exact workshop and production region cannot be confirmed.
The pieces are estimated to date from approximately the 1960s–1970s based on their construction, materials, decorative style and comparison with surviving Showa-period souvenir folk crafts. This dating should be regarded as an informed estimate rather than a confirmed production date.
Today, vintage wooden souvenir crafts of this type are increasingly interesting as examples of Japan's post-war domestic tourism culture and Showa-era folk design. A group containing several different interpretations of the tanuki motif, including a Bunbuku Chagama example, makes an appealing collection for enthusiasts of Japanese folk art, vintage souvenirs and Showa-period objects.
Dimensions and Weight:
Please refer to the photographs for detailed measurements and individual weights.
The two large tanuki figures weigh approximately:
• 233 g
• 182 g
Bunbuku Chagama ornament with wooden base:
• approximately 186 g
Pair of miniature tanuki dolls:
• approximately 9 g total
Condition:
Vintage condition with age-related wear, scratches, discoloration, fading and signs of handling. The cords, tassels, painted surfaces and wooden components show natural aging consistent with older souvenir folk crafts.
The Bunbuku Chagama is missing its small ladle/accessory.
Please carefully examine all photographs, as they form an important part of the condition description.
A distinctive five-piece collection representing the playful character, folklore and good-luck symbolism of the Japanese tanuki, as well as the nostalgic atmosphere of Showa-era Japanese souvenir culture.
