Val Saint Lambert – “Aline” Ruby Overlay Crystal Vase
No reserve price
A striking Val Saint Lambert “Aline” crystal vase, an elegant Belgian design with strong Art Deco influences, produced from the 1940s onwards and later documented in the Val Saint Lambert catalogue.
The vase is made from exceptionally fine, heavy crystal using the traditional overlay technique, combining a rich ruby-red crystal layer with clear crystal underneath. The entire decoration was executed by hand: deeply cut and polished facets reveal the colourless crystal beneath the ruby overlay, creating a dramatic contrast between intense colour and brilliant transparency.
The cutting is particularly impressive. Long, flame-like facets rise towards the flared rim, while the lower section is covered with bold geometric cuts resembling faceted ruby gemstones. As light passes through the thick crystal, these surfaces refract and multiply it, producing flashes of ruby red, clear brilliance and subtle rainbow reflections. The result gives the vase an almost jewel-like architectural quality.
Entirely handcrafted and hand-cut, the Aline model demonstrates the exceptional technical quality for which Val Saint Lambert crystal became internationally renowned. Despite its historical Art Deco character, its sculptural geometry and vivid ruby colour make it remarkably suitable for a contemporary or minimalist interior, where it can stand alone as a decorative object or be used as an impressive flower vase.
The vase is signed “Val Saint Lambert” on the base, and the model is also documented in the original Val Saint Lambert catalogue, a reference for which is shown in the photographs.
It remains in very good vintage condition, preserving the clarity, brilliance and rich ruby colour of the crystal beautifully.
A superb example of Belgian crystal craftsmanship — sculptural, jewel-like and highly decorative, combining the elegance of Art Deco with the unmistakable brilliance of hand-cut Val Saint Lambert crystal.
Val Saint Lambert, nestled in Seraing near Liège, Belgium, is a beacon of crystal craftsmanship with a legacy spanning nearly two centuries. Established in 1826 by chemist François Kemlin and engineer Auguste Lelièvre, the company transformed the remnants of the Val-Saint-Lambert Abbey into a thriving glassworks.
The 19th century marked a period of significant growth for Val Saint Lambert. By the early 1900s, the company employed over 5,000 workers, producing 120,000 pieces of glass daily. Their creations, renowned for exceptional quality and intricate designs, found admirers worldwide, including in Tsarist Russia and North America. A testament to their artistry is the “Vase of the Nine Provinces,” a monumental piece over 2 meters tall and weighing 200 kilograms, crafted for the 1894 World Exhibition in Antwerp.
The 20th century brought challenges, including the impacts of two World Wars and economic downturns. Despite these obstacles, Val Saint Lambert’s resilience ensured the preservation of its artisanal heritage. Today, the company seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design, producing exquisite crystal pieces that cater to modern aesthetics.
Val Saint Lambert stands as a symbol of Belgian craftsmanship, where each piece reflects a harmonious blend of history, artistry, and innovation.
