Item Description
This work is a framed lacquer art panel in Chinkin Wajima-nuri by Masaki Hoeki. Striking groups of trees rendered in gold and silver against a black lacquer ground are complemented by a layer below evoking a shimmering blue water surface or mist. The contrast of black, gold, and blue harmonizes beautifully, making this a piece that commands presence whether displayed in a residence or a retail interior.

The work is housed in a dedicated frame consisting of a red fabric-covered mat and a silver metal outer border, ready to display as-is. The signature "H-Masaki" can be seen at the lower right of the lacquer panel.

This piece comes from a private collection and has been kept in storage.

Artist Profile
Masaki Hoeki is a lacquer artist born in Wajima City, Ishikawa Prefecture, where he continues to be based. Working from this area renowned as a center of Wajima-nuri production, he specializes in the techniques of Chinkin and Maki-e. Chinkin is a technique in which patterns are carved into a lacquered surface and gold leaf or gold powder is then inlaid to create a luminous texture. His artistic lineage traces to Goichi Mitani (1919–2017), a member of the Japan Art Academy and recipient of the Order of Cultural Merit. Hoeki holds associate membership in the Nitten and is also a member of the Japan Contemporary Craft Art Association. He has a record of accepted works at the Nitten and the Japan Contemporary Craft Art Exhibition, and is particularly noted for tree and forest motifs executed in gold Chinkin, with representative works including "Morning Mist" and "Radiant Forest."
