Kutani Shoho Porcelain Vase with Hawk, Pine and Gold Decoration, Wooden Box

Item Description:
Kutani ware is a Japanese ceramic tradition from Ishikawa, celebrated for its expressive painted decoration. Its characteristic overglaze techniques combine carefully defined outlines with colours developed through firing, giving the designs depth and a richly pictorial quality.

This white porcelain vase features a powerful bird of prey, depicted with raised wings and one foot lifted above a spreading pine branch. The large hawk motif dominates the front, with finely defined feathers, grey and reddish-brown shading, and extensive gold decoration across the head, wings and tail. Delicate clusters of pine needles and small cones provide a detailed contrast to the bird’s strong silhouette.

The rounded shoulders taper towards the base, while the short neck opens into a gently flared mouth. Blue floral and wave-patterned panels encircle the neck beneath a gilt rim, complemented by a pointed ornamental border around the foot. Broad areas of white porcelain give the central composition space and emphasis.

The vase retains a gold-coloured paper label bearing the name 正峰 (Shoho). It is accompanied by a wooden box with calligraphic inscriptions, including 花瓶 (“vase”), a Shoho-related inscription and red seals.

Probably Showa period (1926–1989); the exact production date is unknown.
