Viewing and photography note: to explore the play of colour, use a bright, directed white light with subdued surrounding illumination and a dark, neutral background. Slowly rotate and tilt the opal while varying the direction of the light. Different colours will emerge at different positions, and their visibility and intensity will vary with the viewing conditions. The photographs have been colour enhanced to intensify the display; their saturation should not be taken as a guarantee of an identical appearance in person.
