Impressive Stone Celt from Ormu Village, North Coast of Papua New Guinea

A magnificent and exceptionally large stone celt originating from Ormu village on the north coast of West Papua, near Jayapura.

The celt is fashioned from a beautiful, dense, dark green stone with attractive natural mottling and subtle variations in colour. Its elongated, gently tapering shape, smoothly rounded edges and carefully polished surface demonstrate considerable craftsmanship and the skill involved in working such a hard material.

Stone celts were important objects in traditional Papuan societies, originally serving as tools for woodworking and other practical purposes. Certain examples also acquired ceremonial significance and could represent wealth, prestige and ancestral traditions.


The object is in very good condition, with no obvious major damage visible in the photograph.
