Lot Description (English)
A fine and highly decorative pair of WWI Trench Art brass vases, hand-crafted during the First World War from authentic French 75mm artillery shell cases (75mm Mle 1897 cannon).
Artistry & Details:
Art Nouveau Style: Beautifully hand-hammered and embossed with raised floral motifs depicting roses and leaves.
Shaping: Scalloped top rim, chased arc border, and a stylish fluted/pleated lower base.
Headstamp Markings: The bottom base retains clear original Military ordnance stamps: "75 DEC" (75mm Field Artillery) alongside ordnance manufacturer codes (PL).
Condition:
Original antique patina, unpolished to preserve historical authenticity.
Condition Note: One vase exhibits a small period hairline crack/split in the metal near the spiked base shaping, caused by the original metalworking process (visible in the last photos). Structurally sound and stable.
Historical Background (Trench Art & French 75mm)
Trench Art (1915-1918): During World War I, soldiers in the trenches and craftsmen in rear workshops repurposed spent artillery shell casings into decorative objects as souvenirs or memorial pieces.
The 75mm Shell: The French 75mm gun was the icon of WWI field artillery. The high-grade brass of these casings provided an ideal canvas for intricate Art Nouveau metalwork, making a matched pair like this a prized piece for military and antique metalwork collectors
