Rare Antique Double-Drawer Coffee Grinder – Kidney-Shaped Wood Body – "Burg-Rollinger Athus" (Belgium/Italy, c. 1920-1930s)
An exceptional and highly collectible antique manual coffee grinder, featuring a distinctive and rare double-drawer system and an elegant kidney-shaped (semilune) wooden chassis.
While the bottom plate bears the historical badge of the renowned Belgian distributor "Burg-Rollinger" from Athus (established in 1930, located at 46-67 rue de Rodange), the fluid, organic curvature of the wood and the decorative openwork design of the cast-iron arch strongly point towards northern Italian design influences from the interwar period. The absence of industrial stamps on the metal components suggests a high-quality artisanal foundry production made for export.
Technical and Structural Features:
* **Double-Drawer System:** A rare setup where the upper drawer catches finer grounds (ideal for Turkish/espresso) and the lower drawer collects coarser particles.
* **Ergonomic "Kidney" Shape:** Historically designed to fit comfortably between the knees or against the torso for maximum stability while grinding.
* **Top Mechanism:** Open-air cast iron bevel gears with a sliding brass hopper cover and a star-shaped locking nut on the central spindle for grind size adjustment.
Condition Report:
* **Metalwork:** The solid brass hopper and cover have preserved a beautiful, rich authentic patina. The cast iron gear framework and the threaded rod show normal surface rust/oxidation consistent with age, but the gear teeth are fully intact with no broken parts.
* **Woodwork:** The curved wooden body is structurally solid and retains its warm vintage tone. Showing typical signs of handling and age, adding to its character.
* **Authenticity:** The original silver-toned shield-shaped metal badge on the underside is intact and completely legible.
Dimensions : 29 cm × 11.5 cm × 31 cm
A beautifully preserved piece of European coffee history, perfect as a prominent display item for collectors or antique enthusiasts.
Condition :
Good - Used with signs of age & flaws (Surface rust on the cast iron mechanism, authentic vintage patina on brass and wood, fully functional gears).
The product will be professionally packed and sent safely to your address by local post.
The pictures of the product are made with the highest possible resolution, precisely to capture possible small defects (small scratches, stains, defect), the pictures are part of the product description.
