Groot Antiek Chinees Geborduurd Zijden Altaardoek met Unieke Inscriptie - Fu Lu Shou & Boeddhistische Leeuwen - Late Qing-dynastie, ca. 1900 (104 x 75 cm)
尺寸:104 cm(宽)x 75 cm(高)。
Large Antique Chinese Embroidered Silk Altar Valance / Cloth with Unique Inscription - Fu Lu Shou & Buddhist Lions - Late Qing Dynasty, c. 1900 (104 x 75 cm)
Description:
A beautiful, highly collectible, and authentic antique Chinese altar cloth (also known as an altar valance or Tok Wi) of substantial size (104 cm wide by 75 cm high). This type of ceremonial textile was traditionally used to drape the front of an altar table in a temple or family shrine during major festivals.
The textile is divided into two distinct registers, heavily adorned with fine hand-embroidery:
Central Panel: Depicts the Three Star Gods (Fu Lu Shou), the deities of Fortune, Prosperity, and Longevity. The figure of Shou Lao (the God of Longevity) is exquisitely rendered holding his iconic peach of immortality. They are flanked by mythical Buddhist lions (Foo Dogs) providing spiritual protection.
Upper Frieze: A narrow panel displaying a lively procession of various mythological figures, immortals, and animals.
Technique & Craftsmanship:
The embroidery showcases superb artistry, utilizing the traditional 'couching' technique. Heavy metallic gold and silver threads are meticulously anchored to the ground fabric with tiny, colorful silk stitches, creating a stunning three-dimensional relief effect. The faces and features are intricately stitched with fine silk filaments.
Unique Inscription on Reverse:
Highly desirable for collectors, the reverse features an original handwritten ink inscription: 「焦金地杠太子壽」 (Jiao Jin Di Gang Tai Zi Shou). This serves as an important historical record, tracing the piece back to a specific local neighborhood or processional guild ('Jiaojin') and indicating it was commissioned as a votive offering celebrating the birthday (Shou) of the Prince deity (Taizi, associated with Nezha).
Specifications:
Material: Silk, gold/silver metallic thread, backed with a sturdy period woven cotton/linen fabric.
Dimensions: 104 cm (width) x 75 cm (height).
Period: Late Qing Dynasty / Early Republic Period (c. 1900).
Origin: China.
Condition:
In good, authentic antique condition, exhibiting honest signs of age and ceremonial temple use. The fabric shows minor discolouration, historic staining to the backing cloth, and light wear/fraying along the outer textile borders. Some loose threads are present within the goldwork embroidery, but the overall structural integrity and visual vibrancy remain wonderful. Retains its original fabric hanging loops at the top edge
Careful and Secure Shipping
We understand that this antique and delicate textile piece requires the utmost care. Therefore, we take great pride in our professional packaging standards.
Packaging Method: The altar cloth will be carefully rolled or flat-packed using acid-free protective material, wrapped in bubble wrap, and securely packed inside a heavy-duty, double-walled cardboard box to prevent any creases or damage during transit
