Ryūjō Kannon (龍上観音) – Kannon Riding a Dragon

Original Japanese Hand-Painted Silk Hanging Scroll by Murayama Kagaku 村山華岳
⠀
An impressive Japanese hanging scroll depicting Kannon, the Buddhist Bodhisattva of Compassion, standing majestically upon swirling clouds above a powerful celestial dragon.
⠀
This striking composition combines the peaceful elegance of Buddhist imagery with the dramatic energy of a traditional Japanese dragon, creating a visually captivating work of art.
⠀
Artwork Description
⠀
At the centre of the composition stands Kannon, portrayed with a serene expression, an elaborate golden headdress and beautifully flowing robes.
⠀
A luminous halo surrounds the figure, emphasising its sacred and compassionate nature.
⠀
Below, a magnificent dragon emerges from swirling clouds, displaying fiery orange eyes, a powerful open mouth, sharp fangs, long whiskers and formidable claws.
⠀
The dragon's body curves dynamically through the composition, with individual scales, flowing hair and richly coloured details carefully rendered.
⠀
The soft golden background, atmospheric clouds and delicate gradations of colour contrast beautifully with the vivid details of the dragon.
⠀
The painting is complemented by an elegant traditional Japanese mounting featuring decorative green and gold brocade, creating a harmonious and refined presentation.
⠀
Kannon and the Dragon in Japanese Buddhist Art
⠀
Kannon, known internationally as Avalokiteshvara or Guanyin, is one of the most revered figures in East Asian Buddhism and represents compassion, mercy and the protection of living beings.
⠀
In traditional East Asian symbolism, the dragon is associated with great spiritual power, protection, water and the forces of nature.
⠀
The combination of Kannon and the dragon creates a powerful contrast between compassion and strength.
⠀
This distinctive Buddhist subject makes the painting particularly attractive to collectors of Japanese religious art, dragon imagery and traditional Asian painting.
⠀
Artist and Signature
⠀
The painting bears the signature and red seal of Murayama Kagaku 村山華岳, a Japanese painter associated with the Shōfūkai painting group.
⠀
The accompanying original wooden tomobako also bears the artist's signature and corresponding seal.
⠀
An additional storage label identifies the artist as Murayama Kagaku 村山華岳 and the title as Ryūjō Kannon (龍上観音).
⠀
The matching inscriptions on the painting and wooden box are important features of this artwork.
