Ifa divination bowl (Agere Ifa) with nursing mother – Yoruba – Nigeria – Wood and pigment – Early 20th century
Origin: Nigeria
People: Yoruba
Type: Ifa divination bowl (Agere Ifa)
Material(s): Carved wood, traces of blue pigment
Dimensions: 16 × 15 × 15 cm
Period: First half of the 20th century
Provenance: Ex private French collection
An old Yoruba Agere Ifa divination bowl from Nigeria, distinguished by its expressive representation of a mother nursing her child, its surviving traces of blue polychromy, and its deeply weathered surface.
Among the Yoruba, Agere Ifa bowls were traditionally used to hold the sixteen sacred palm nuts (ikin) employed by babalawo priests in Ifa divination, a spiritual practice associated with Orunmila, the deity of wisdom and destiny.
The sculptural composition is particularly touching. Beneath the shallow bowl, a seated mother holds a child against her body in an intimate gesture of maternal care. Although the child's figure has suffered considerable erosion, its position remains legible, suggesting the act of breastfeeding.
The mother's face is remarkably well preserved in contrast with the surrounding sculpture. Its large eyes, prominent features and expressive mouth give the figure an almost Madonna-like presence, conveying a striking sense of tenderness and dignity.
The bowl is supported by a complex arrangement of sculptural and architectural elements, including a lateral pillar decorated with an interlacing geometric pattern. Traces of blue pigment survive on the mother's face, body and surrounding elements, adding an important dimension to the original polychrome composition.
The considerable age-related erosion has profoundly altered the lower part of the sculpture. Nevertheless, the essential elements of the maternal scene remain recognizable, preserving much of its emotional and sculptural impact.
A compelling old Yoruba divination bowl, appreciated for its maternal imagery, expressive surviving features, traces of polychromy and strong ethnographic character.
Condition
Heavily worn and eroded, with substantial old losses, particularly to the child, the lower sculptural elements and the base.
Numerous abrasions, chips, cracks, edge losses and surface irregularities throughout. Significant wear to the rim of the bowl.
The mother's face and the overall composition remain clearly recognizable. Traces of blue pigment are preserved.
Please examine the photographs carefully, as they form an essential part of the condition description.
Included
The divination bowl only.
No display stand included.
