Gold coin, 50 Mexican pesos were minted in the years 1921-1931 (4.9 million coins) by the Mexican Mint. Between 1949 and 1972 the mint released an additional 4 million units as duplicates with the date 1947.
Obverse
The obverse depicts the Angel of Independence, a personification of the Greek goddess of victory, Nike, standing in front of the Mexican volcanoes Popocatepetl and Iztaccihuatl, holding a laurel wreath in her right hand to symbolise victory, and broken chains in her left hand to symbolise freedom. To the Angel's left you can find the denomination '50 PESOS' and the year '1821', denoting the date when Mexico gained independence. To the right is the coin's gold content '37.5 Gr.' with the text 'ORO PURO', which means 'pure gold', as well as an issuance date.
Reverse
The reverse depicts the coat of arms of Mexico, a golden eagle perched on a cactus with raised wings, devouring a snake. The eagle is surrounded by the text 'ESTADOS UNIDOS MEXICANOS', meaning 'United States of Mexico'

The edge contains the text 'Independencia y libertad', translating to 'Independence and freedom'.
