A Penca or Penca de Balangandan, is a traditional Brazilian piece of jewellery fitted with different charms. The upper part is has two birds on either side as a reference to Africa and Brazil.
The charms each have different meanings. . By making noise he exorcises evil spirits and asked for a good harvest, healing, fertility or rain. This rattle has 11 fetishes hanging from it, depicting i.a. an orange, a cob of corn, a pomegranate
(fertility), a papaya, a wooden arm with a silver-coloured bracelet and a water jug. Eleven pieces in total. The handle has different birds on both sides.
They are supposed to be lucky charms or amulets, but it is also said that they show the value of a slave.
Historically it is associated with Afro-Brazilian traditions and cultures adhered to by plantation workers. Amulet typical for old organisations, symbolises the assimilation of African symbols and traditions in Brazilian culture.
Made of a copper alloy, not solid.
