Byôbu 屏风 (折叠屏风) - 金箔,漆木,丝绸 - 日本 - 19世纪(晚江户时代/明治早期)

An auspicious, medium-sized tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a painting of boats in open water. The two most prominent boats carry noblemen and women on a leisurely tour, surrounded by more modest travelers and a fishing boat hard at work. They encounter a large group of cranes 鶴 (tsuru) flying past on the horizon and are visited by a group of ancient minogame 蓑亀, with one man even feeding a turtle sake from a cup. Surrounded by clouds of green and gold speckles. In Japanese symbolism, the minogame and the crane are often paired to represent longevity, wisdom, and good fortune. The minogame, a turtle with a trailing coat of seaweed or plants, symbolizes the ability to live for centuries, embodying resilience and ancient wisdom. The crane, known for its graceful elegance and reputed lifespan of a thousand years, symbolizes good fortune, fidelity, and enduring happiness. Together, they form a powerful emblem of long life, steadfastness, and blessings, commonly seen in art and celebratory occasions like weddings. The artwork is rendered in colour and ink on paper. The screen is bordered by two silk trims – a slender dark brown-golden one and a broader ecru one, It is encased in a black lacquered wooden frame. Period: Japan – 19th century (Late Edo period/Early Meiji period). Dimensions: Total width: 318.2 cm (2 x 54.1 cm, 4 x 52.5 cm); Height: 150.8 cm. Considering its age it is in a good condition with traces of wear conform age and restorations, paper restorations on the reverse. For a clear condition reference, please look at the photos. The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art. When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
