Context:
Didier Lefèvre was a French photographer best known for documentary work in conflict zones. In 1986, he joined a Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) mission to Afghanistan during the Soviet–Afghan War. Caught between the front lines of the Soviet Union and the Mujahideen, photographer Didier Lefèvre accompanied and documented a MSF team as they worked in the war. He captured the difficult working conditions as well as poignant human experiences and the hostility they encountered. The MSF team operated covertly, entering Afghanistan from Peshawar, Pakistan, and traveling through remote northern regions such as Badakhshan. Their aim was to support rural clinics, treat civilians affected by the war, and bring medical supplies to areas inaccessible to international organizations at that time. Twelve photographs from his reportage are published with this portfolio.
