An important and very rare work on Wayang.
On the beautiful plates we see many characters who play an important role in the stories of the Wayang Purwa.
Tyra Kleen (1874-1951) was a renowned Swedish artist who spent many years in Asia. She came to Indonesia in 1919 and became particularly fascinated by the theatre and art of dances in Java and Bali. This work is devoted to Vajang, the ancient theatre tradition of Java. Detailed description of a Vajang performance including beautiful illustrations made after Tyra Kleen's watercolour drawings. She made other books on the Indonesian theatre arts, among others a beautiful book on the Balinese dances.
