賣家描述
"Historia Batavica. Ex Optimis Qvibvsqve Avtoribvs" (1541) by Gerardus Geldenhouwer (1482 - 1542)
Published in 1541, in Cologne (Coloniae - Köln) by Eucharij Ceruicorni (Eucharius Cervicornus).
First edition. It comprises the 1530 Strassbourg first edition of Historia Batavica by Geldenhouwer and other texts such as "Epistola elegantissima ad illustrissimum || principem Gulielmũ Gelriae" or "Enchiridion de officio principis ac magistratus christiani" by Pieter Gillis (Pierre Gilles) among other annexes (all annexes presented on the verso of title page).
Very rare - it could only be found in very limited national and universities' libraries.
Very good, clean, healthy, collectable copy.
Bound in contemporary vellum. Probably the hardback bounds are a later addition, because they are in a very good shape for their age.
Very good condition for a book of its age, which is very rare for its age. Unblemished pages, no foxing and almost no stains. No markings.
Cover has wear such as rubbing and scuffs, outer hinges holding very well. Older ink title and inscription on top and bottom of spine.
Old pencil inscription (title in English and author) on front endpaper. Old small pencil inscriptions on back endpaper. Old stamp on front guard page with the library from which has been de-commissioned sometimes during its life.
Other than that, pages in very good condition. Some really unnoticeable stains.
The book is in Latin, it has 24 pages of annexes collected by Geldenhouwer and 110 pages of the Historia Batavica published by the author in 1531.
Woodcut title page. Six other woodcuts throughout the book.
The book measures 15.2 cm in height, 10.4 cm in length and 2 cm in width.
Gerardus Geldenhouwer (Nijmegen 1482 - Marburg 1542) was a reformed scholar active mainly in Leuven. He worked as a corrector, notably for the first edition of Thomas More's Utopia. He was a friend of Erasmus and he tried to connect Erasmus with the Reformation. Emperor Maximilian named Geldenhouwer “poeta laureatus” in 1517.
"Historia Batavica" represents a very early humanist history of Holland in Roman and early medieval times. The work also includes long extracts from Tacitus as well as a Latin translation of part of a work by Jean Lemaire des Belges.
The publisher, Eucharius Cervicornus (Eucharij Ceruicorni, also spelled Ceruicornus or Hertzhorn), was a significant 16th Century German printer and publisher active in Cologne and Marburg.
