Attention: due to customs regulations we can only ship inside the European Union. Please ensure you have a valid EU shipping address before placing a bid.
Ancient Roman bronze votive Mercury statue decorated with silver bands running from the shoulders to the front and back. He is wearing a winged cap (Petasos) and holding a caduceus. These symbols emphasize his role as a messenger and swift traveller.
This type of statue was used for home devotion and offerings, left by worshippers to invoke the favour of Mercury, thank him for answered prayers, or seek protection for a future travel journey.
The figure will be delivered in a display case as shown in the photographs. Its attractive presentation also makes it an ideal gift for anyone with an interest in history, archaeology or the ancient world.
Size: ± 44 mm
Display: ± 7 x 7 cm
Good solid condition, appealing olive-green patina, one leg and arm missing as usual for offerings. Signs of wear consistent with age and use.
Certificate of Authenticity: available upon request (pdf-format).
Mercury, the Roman equivalent of the Greek god Hermes is the messenger of the gods and is associated with trade, prosperity, eloquence, and communication. His attributes were a purse, winged cap and a caduceus.
