Chinese blue and white celadon ground baluster vase, 19th C., probably TongZhi period (1856-1875).
Handpainted scene illustrates myth of Dragon Gate. Furious dragon encircled by flames between clouds, over tumbling waves, out of which a carp jumps, if succeds to pass river rapids can transform into dragon. It symbolises success as consequence of hard work, used also to indicate success in Chinese Civil Service.
Minor superficial baking flaws on rim/bottom. Minor firing mistakes on glaze. Glaze hairline crack invisible from inside - 16cm. No traces of restorations. Neck in perfect condition. Not UV tested.
