ZANZIBAR CHEST, 19th century hardwood and brass mounted with original red lacquer finish, rising lid and three drawers. Large and very heavy chest! Height: 51 cm / Width: 51 cm / Length: 115 cm / Depth: 31.5 cm Ottoman wedding chest. A fine rare Zanzibar chest from the early 19th century (with later adjustments). Made from Sudanese teak. This chest is decorated with intricate patterns formed from brass studs, and hammered and pierced brass sheets. Interior with cast brass hinges and fitted til on the right side. Three lower drawers are fitted into the lower front case. Heavy brass handles with batwing back plates are located on each end and the chest rests on three removable shaped feet, Spirals and lines of brass studs green with verdigris patina cover the boxes like animal scales. Retains a wonderful old wood and brass patina. Rich patination and very good proportions. Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous part of Tanzania in East Africa. It is composed of the Zanzibar Archipelago in the Indian Ocean, off the coast of the mainland, and consists of many small islands and two large ones: Unguja (the main island, referred to informally as Zanzibar) and Pemba. The capital is Zanzibar City, located on the island of Unguja. Its historic centre is Stone Town, which is a World Heritage Site.
