Daruma Daishi Kokeshi - Holz - Shosan Shitou, Seifu Gono - Japan - 20. Jahrhundert
This is a representative piece of Daruma made from Japanese oak.
It embodies the spirit of protecting us by glaring at all evils. Daruma is a figurine motif based on Bodhidharma, the founder of Zen Buddhism in China, believed to have been created around 1600. It carries the spirit of Bodhidharma's perseverance ('不撓不屈') and the idea of rising up after falling ('七転び八起き').
Therefore, Daruma serves not just as a mere ornament but also as an object of prayer, uplifting people's spirits. Daruma is a traditional Japanese lucky charm, symbolizing prayers and strengthening of the mind.
