2 Strands of ancient carnelian beads. Western Africa. Tribal, ethnic jewelry
Two strands of ancient carnelian and banded agate beads of different shapes sourced in Mali.
– Strand 1 (39 beads):
Beads measures: from ø 5,1 to 21,7 mm.
Strand measures (bead to bead): 36 cm. / 14,2 inches.
– Strand 2 (23 beads):
Beads measures: from ø 7,3 to 14,1 mm.
Strand measures (bead to bead): 31 cm. / 12,2 inches.
Beads of this kind coming from Djenné excavations are dated from the 9 to 13th Centuries. Most of them were made in India and traded to Western Africa and Asia by Islamic merchants. Some may be African-made. A few ones were made in Idar Oberstein (Germany).
Worn. Good condition with some losses (see photos).
Collectible and useful as jewelry supplies.
