Teller - 1690 Kangxi Porcelain Dish Riot of Rotterdam/Kostermann - Porzellan

We were lucky enough to acquire a very nice set of small saucer dishes with the well known and interesting scene of the Kostermann riot / Riot of Rotterdam (some historical information below with also an original print of the riot). We already have an example of larger size but these smaller ones are a 'first timer' for us. The history behind these pieces is what makes them so interesting for us, besides the fact ofcourse that they are beautiful. Diameter: 11CM Period: Kangxi, after 1690. Country of origin: China Mark: Yu (Jade) The dish shows how Rotterdam citizens are busy demolishing the house of bailiff Van Zuylen van Nijevelt at the Leuvehaven on October 5, 1690. The walls are pulled down to apparently loud cheers from bystanders. The incident at the Leuvehaven was the climax of what became known as “the Kostermann riot”. The riot was sparked by the brutal execution of a city guard called Cornelis Kosterman and culminated in the destruction of the Chief Bailiff's house by a mob. The design was copied from a silver medal struck by Jan Smeltzing (1656-93) after an engraving by Gerard van Loon to commemorate the riots. It is assumed that an order for the production came soon after the actual events in 1690. For examples of these plates in the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art see Beurdeley, 'Porcelain of the East India Companies', London, 1962 p.189 (cat 170) and Le Corbellier, 'China Trade Porcelain', 1974 p.31. pl.12. For more information see howard & Ayers, 'China for the West' vol.1 p.60, pl.15. If you like more historical information about this riot please take a look at: http://www.vergetenverhalen.nl/2015/09/28/rellen-in-de-gouden-eeuw-het-kostermanoproer-in-rotterdam-1690/ Condition 1 line from rim, 2 small chips and 1 fleebite.
