Artist shows his superb painting skills by depicting the civet cat in the moonlight and the surrounding trees and grass. Artist: Ōhashi Suiseki大橋翠石(1865-1945), Japanese painter active from the mid-Meiji period to the early Showa period. He painted many tigers and was highly praised in Europe and the United States, including being the only Japanese to receive a gold medal at the Paris World's Fair (1900). He was born in Ogaki Town, Anpachi District, Mino Province (now Shinmachi 2-chome, Ogaki City, Gifu Prefecture). His real name was Ohashi Usaburo. He was commonly known as Uichiro. Notable relatives include his older brother, Ohashi Kamazaburou (also known as Ohashi Mampo), a Japanese painter, and his son-in-law and disciple, Ohashi Suiho (Ohashi Suiho).
