Wooden Confectionery Box with Chrysanthemum Motif
This is a Japanese wooden confectionery box decorated with raised chrysanthemum motifs.
It comes with its original tomobako (wooden storage box), which bears ink calligraphy.
White chrysanthemum flowers are applied in relief on the wooden surface using a traditional decorative technique known as okiage (raised decoration). This method gives the design a strong sense of depth and dimension, creating an appealing contrast between the natural wood grain and the white floral motifs.
The well-balanced octagonal form and the chrysanthemum designs arranged on both the interior and exterior reflect a calm and refined Japanese aesthetic. Boxes of this type have traditionally been used as kashiki (confectionery containers) in tea ceremony settings, while also serving as decorative craft objects.
No artist’s signature or seal is found on the box itself.
This work is offered as an unsigned piece accompanied by a tomobako with ink inscription.
Combining practical use with visual appeal, this piece allows appreciation of traditional Japanese woodworking techniques and decorative design.
