Hüppi was born on 11 February 1935 in Switzerland. He trained as a goldsmith from 1950 to 1954 in Lucerne, Switzerland, and worked as an assistant until 1954.

In 1958 and 1959, he traveled to the Middle East. In 1960, he studied sculpture at the Pforzheim Art School and worked at the Hamburg Academy of Fine Arts. There he became a professor of calligraphy and drawing from 1961 to 1964.

From 1964 to 1968, he was an assistant at the Staatliche Kunsthalle in Baden-Baden. From 1974 to 1999, he was a painting professor at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. With his class, he undertook study trips around the Mediterranean, the Middle East, Africa, Italy, Sicily, Tunisia, Egypt, Turkey, Kurdistan, Syria, Iran and Armenia. Among his students are Holger Bunk, Claus Föttinger, Bertram Jesdinsky, Silke Lever Kuehne, Horst Münch, Markus Oehlen, Thomas Rentmeister, Corinne Wasmuht.

In 1998, he co-founded with Erwin Gebert the "Museum in the Bush" in Etaneno, Namibia. Since then, he has been the museum director and head of programs for the artists.
