【Product details】
This Black Pottery sculptural box by Sakata Jinnai has a compact, solid form with softly irregular contours that emphasise its handmade, sculptural presence. The exterior is fully carved with his signature deep relief “shinjin-mon” pattern, forming dense, wave-like ridges that wrap continuously around the surface. In this example, the overall tone appears slightly darker and more concentrated, with deeper charcoal and black hues that give the piece a heavier, more subdued visual weight. The carving reads as sharper and more pronounced due to the reduced contrast from lighter firing marks, resulting in a calmer yet more monumental presence.
When opened, the interior reveals a dramatic contrast, finished with a gold foil pressed lining that reflects light and adds warmth and intensity to the piece. The object separates into a base and lid, allowing it to be appreciated both as a closed sculptural form and as an opened container with a striking inner surface.
Mashiko ware originated in the late Edo period in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture, and is celebrated for its earthy textures, durability, and warm handmade character. Sakata Jinnai’s work builds on this tradition while pushing it into a contemporary sculptural direction through form, surface, and firing.
Sakata Jinnai (b. 1943) is a distinguished Japanese artist celebrated for his innovative Black Pottery. A student of the legendary ShHamada Shoji, Sakata established his kiln in Mashiko in 1966. His career spans decades of international exhibitions, from Takashimaya to New York and Shanghai, and his practice has evolved to include glass, washi, and bonsai. Exploring cosmic and natural themes, his status as a master is evidenced by his dedications of work to Japan’s most sacred sites, including the Ise Grand and Izumo Taisha shrines.
The piece is in good to very good used condition with minor blemishes. Please refer to the photos for details.
