Item Description
舟越保武 Funakoshi Yasutake(1912-2002)
This is a bronze bust sculpture of a young woman by Funakoshi Yasutake, one of the most celebrated figurative sculptors of postwar Japan. The work captures the artist's signature aesthetic — a serene, idealized female face rendered with exquisite sensitivity and quiet spiritual presence. The bust is mounted on a white marble base, which bears the artist's engraved signature "Y. FUNAKOSHI," adding authenticity and collectible value to this piece. The smooth, dark patinated bronze surface beautifully contrasts with the clean white marble pedestal, creating an elegant composition that is entirely characteristic of Funakoshi's refined sculptural style. This type of female bust — contemplative, graceful, and imbued with poetic stillness — is among the most iconic and sought-after formats in Funakoshi's body of work.

Artist Profile
Funakoshi Yasutake (1912–2002) was one of the foremost figurative sculptors of postwar Japan, widely regarded alongside Sato Churyo as a defining figure of 20th-century Japanese sculpture. Born in Ichinohe, Iwate Prefecture, he graduated from the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now Tokyo University of the Arts) in 1939 and co-founded the Shin Seisaku Association's sculpture division. A devout Catholic, Funakoshi imbued much of his work with deep spiritual resonance — most notably his monumental Twenty-Six Martyrs of Nagasaki (1962), for which he received the Takamura Kotaro Prize. He later received the Papal Order of St. Gregory the Great from Pope Paul VI in 1973 and was designated a Person of Cultural Merit in 1999. He served as a professor at Tokyo University of the Arts (1967–1980) and as an honorary professor from 1986. Despite suffering a stroke in 1987 that paralyzed his right side, he continued to create with his left hand until his death. His son, Funakoshi Katsura, is also a celebrated sculptor. Funakoshi Yasutake's idealized female figures — rendered in marble and bronze with painterly frontality and lyrical grace — remain among the most beloved and collected works in modern Japanese sculpture.
