A hira-natsume tea caddy decorated with chrysanthemum and paulownia motifs.
The chrysanthemum and paulownia have long been revered as noble crests in Japan.
Kiku-kiri motifs are depicted in red maki-e on a black lacquer ground.
The wide top surface of the hira-natsume is utilized to create a composition that is both brilliant and calm.
