Item Description:
政文 Masafumi — Hanshidō Cast Bronze Vase
This elegant teardrop-shaped cast bronze vase showcases the extraordinary hanshidō (斑紫铜) patination technique, a hallmark of the Yamagata metalworking tradition.
The rounded, organic form rises from a modest foot ring to a wide, full belly, tapering gently toward a compact cylindrical neck — a silhouette that evokes both restraint and natural abundance.
The surface is enveloped in a richly layered patina of deep chestnut brown, warm sienna, and muted sage green, the result of a complex chemical oxidation process unique to hanshidō work.
Each area of color shifts imperceptibly into the next, creating a surface that appears almost geological in its depth and variation — no two pieces are ever alike.
The tactile texture of the bronze beneath adds to the contemplative quality of the work.
The base bears a clearly cast seal reading "Masafumi" (政文), identifying this as a signed work by the artist.
The piece would serve beautifully in a tokonoma alcove arrangement or as a refined standalone decorative object on a desk or shelf.

Artist Profile
政文 Masafumi is a Japanese metalwork artist working within the venerable tradition of cast copper craftsmanship. The hanshidō (斑紫銅) technique employed in this vase is a specialty of the Yamagata region, where skilled artisans apply controlled chemical processes to achieve the distinctive mottled crimson-brown and sage-green patination on pure copper. The unpredictable nature of the oxidation means that each piece emerges as a one-of-a-kind work, bearing the mark of both the artist's mastery and the inherent character of the material. This approach reflects the Japanese aesthetic philosophy of wabi-sabi — finding beauty in transience, imperfection, and the passage of time.
