A striking Kuro-yō-yu Tsutsuhanairi (Black Obsidian Glaze Cylindrical Flower Vase) by the 13th-generation master Yamaguchi Kozaemon of the renowned Kozaemon Kiln in Seto, Aichi Prefecture. This large and commanding vessel — standing 25 cm tall with an 11 cm diameter — showcases the artist's signature kuro-yō (black obsidian) glaze, a style he pioneered from the late 1960s onward that brought him national and international acclaim.
The vase features a bold cylindrical body with a distinctive wide, flat flared rim — a form evoking both classical Japanese ceramic tradition and a striking modern sensibility. The deep, lustrous black obsidian glaze covers the body in expressive, gestural layers, with areas where the glaze thins to reveal warm brown clay beneath, creating a dramatic interplay of light and shadow. White ash-like glaze traces streak across the surface, adding a raw, elemental quality reminiscent of natural rock formations. The unglazed foot ring shows finely turned, warm sandy-beige clay with characteristic kiln drips pooling at the base — a testament to high-temperature wood-fired craftsmanship.
The piece is accompanied by its original signed tomobako (wooden storage box) inscribed with the title 黒耀釉筒花入 (Kuro-yō-yu Tsutsuhanairi) and the artist's seal, as well as two exhibition pamphlets related to the Kozaemon Kiln. Artist Profile
山口小左衛門 Yamaguchi Kozaemon XIII (1913– ) was born in Nishigama-cho, Seto City, Aichi Prefecture, into a prestigious lineage of ceramic artists. He succeeded the 13th headship of the Kozaemon Kiln, one of Seto's most distinguished pottery families, dedicating his career to both the preservation of traditional Seto ceramic techniques and the creation of bold new artistic forms. In 1968, he pioneered the Kuro-yō (Black Obsidian) tea bowl style, which gained the admiration of leading tea ceremony masters across Japan. His Ōgon Kuro-yō (Golden Black Obsidian) bowl is permanently preserved at Nagoya Castle, and his Kan-getsu Kuro-yō (Cold Moon Black Obsidian) bowl was treasured by Prime Minister Eisaku Sato. Works by Yamaguchi Kozaemon XIII were graciously accepted by Emperor Showa and Empress Nagako as imperial gifts, and his ceramics are preserved in the collections of Shingon and Soto Zen Buddhist temples. His works have been exhibited at institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Louvre. He received numerous prestigious awards including the Higashikuni Imperial Prince Award, the International Art Grand Prix, and commendations from the Minister of Education. In 1988, he was named an Honorary Citizen of New Britain, USA.
