finely carved ancestor figure from the Lake Sentani region, Papua. The figure is carved from a single piece of wood and shows the characteristic stylised features associated with the sculptural traditions of the Sentani cultural area.
Figures of this type represent ancestral beings and were connected with local belief systems in which ancestors and spirit forces played an important role in daily life and ritual practice.
The sculpture displays a pleasing aged surface and patina consistent with traditional materials and age. The expressive carving gives the figure a strong presence despite its modest size.
Condition: overall good condition with a small chip missing, as visible in the photos.
