Global Money Week – “From Barter to Banknotes - Global Empires, Global Currencies.
This silver 1 Rupee from 1877, minted in Mumbai (Bombay), marks a significant turning point in the history of British India. It was the very first year that the title of Empress was used on the coinage of Queen Victoria, following the Royal Titles Act of 1876. As the standard unit of the Indian monetary system, this Rupee circulated through one of the largest and most complex economies in the world. Struck in 91.7% silver, it represents the formalization of imperial currency and the shift toward the modern, standardized financial administration that integrated the Indian subcontinent into the global British trade network.
