Au IIIᵉ siècle av. J.-C., Carthage est une grande puissance maritime et commerciale dominant l’ouest de la Méditerranée. Elle affronte Rome dans les Premières puis Secondes Guerres Puniques, marquées par des batailles majeures comme Écnome ou Trasimène. Cette période voit l’ascension d’Hamilcar puis d’Hannibal, qui porte la guerre jusqu’en Italie.

In the 3rd century BC, Carthage was a major maritime and commercial power, dominating the western Mediterranean. It clashed with Rome in the First and Second Punic Wars, marked by major battles such as Aecnomus and Lake Trasimene.
