Original His Master's Voice (HMV) Portable Gramophone – circa 1930s
Offered here is a classic portable suitcase gramophone manufactured by His Master's Voice (HMV), one of the most iconic and respected gramophone brands in the history of recorded music.
This model dates from approximately 1930–1935 and is equipped with the well-known HMV Spring Motor Type 794, a high-quality mechanical motor used in several portable gramophones of the period. These motors are appreciated for their reliability, strong torque and stable rotation speed.
The gramophone features the famous “Nipper” His Master's Voice logo inside the lid, depicting the dog listening to the gramophone horn — one of the most recognizable trademarks in the music industry.
Portable gramophones like this were designed to allow people to take music anywhere, making them extremely popular for travel, picnics and social gatherings during the early 20th century.
Mechanical System
The gramophone is fully mechanical and does not require electricity.
The internal spring motor (Type 794) is wound using the original side crank. Once wound, the motor powers the turntable to play shellac records.
A speed regulator marked “F – S” (Fast / Slow) allows fine adjustment of the rotation speed to match different recordings.
The gramophone is designed for 78 RPM shellac records, the dominant record format of the era.
Condition
The gramophone is in working condition.
The motor winds and the turntable rotates as intended. The tonearm, soundbox and speed control are present and intact. The original crank is included.
The case shows normal signs of age consistent with a vintage portable gramophone but remains in good collectible condition.
Please refer to the photographs as they form an integral part of the description.
