Item Description
桂山 Keizan — Spherical Flower Vase with Purple-Mist Variegated Glaze
This quietly captivating spherical flower vase is a work bearing the seal Keizan (桂山) — a studio name with roots in the distinguished Mino-yaki (美濃焼) ceramic tradition of Gifu Prefecture, Japan, one of the country's most historically important and technically accomplished ceramic regions.
The piece is a study in understated mastery: a perfectly resolved form, a rare and atmospheric glaze, and a level of throwing skill that announces itself only gradually, through close observation.
The body is a pure, fully resolved sphere — taut and even from every angle — that abruptly gathers into a short cylindrical neck terminating in a beautifully profiled, outward-flaring disc rim.
This detail at the mouth is particularly fine: the rim is thin, precisely leveled, and glazed in deep purple-black, providing a crisp visual counterpoint to the mottled body.
The transition from sphere to neck is minimal and precise. The foot ring is unglazed, exposing a warm, sandy-buff stoneware body with visible grog inclusions — honest, direct craft.
The glaze is the great distinction of this piece. The entire outer surface is covered in a murasaki (紫 — purple)-toned variegated glaze that shifts moment to moment with the light and angle of viewing.
At its lightest zones, the glaze is a soft, chalky lavender-white — almost like morning mist clinging to cold stone.
Moving toward the lower register, it deepens into dense, soot-dark purple-grey, before giving way at the equator to a complex, streaked band where the two tones overlap and interweave in vertical rivulets, like rain on a window.
The texture throughout is softly matte: no glass-like reflection, just a quiet, mineral presence that rewards patience and close looking.
The mark Keizan (桂山) is impressed into the side of the foot ring.
A piece of genuine quality whose appeal will deepen over time.

About the Keizan Tradition
Keizan (桂山) is a studio name associated with the Keizan-gama (桂山窯) kiln of Toki City, Gifu Prefecture — a kiln with over 100 years of continuous history in the Mino-yaki tradition, founded by master potter Wada Keijiro (和田桂次郎) in the Meiji period. Mino-yaki (美濃焼) is one of Japan's most celebrated ceramic traditions, with roots stretching back over 1,300 years. During the Azuchi-Momoyama period (16th century), under the patronage of Oda Nobunaga and the flourishing of the tea ceremony, Mino produced some of Japan's most iconic ceramic styles: Shino, Oribe, Ki-Seto and Kuro-Seto — wares that continue to define the aesthetic vocabulary of Japanese ceramics today. Keizan-gama has maintained this tradition of technically accomplished, quietly refined craft across four generations of the Wada family.
