This is a Bizen ware vase (flower vessel), a traditional Japanese ceramic piece.
The work is unglazed, showcasing the natural texture of the clay. During the firing process, natural kiln effects such as goma (sesame-like ash deposits), ash covering, and various kiln transformations have developed richly across the surface. The transitions in color—from dark brown to yellowish and greyish tones—create a highly attractive and expressive appearance. It embodies the strength and natural beauty characteristic of Bizen ware, resulting in a simple yet powerful presence.
While based on a cylindrical form, the piece features subtle undulations along the surface, allowing different expressions depending on the light. It can be used as a single-flower vase, but also has strong sculptural qualities as an art object.
The piece comes with its original wooden box. Based on the box inscription and the ceramic mark, it is considered to be a work by an artist, although the specific maker has not been identified.
⸻
■ Condition
Overall in good condition.
Natural kiln effects such as goma, firing marks, and small stone inclusions can be observed; these are characteristic features of Bizen ware and are not considered damage.
