Ame-no-tajikarao 天手力男神 / Japanese Bicchu Kagura wooden folk craft mask
Ame-no-tajikarao 天手力男神
Japanese deity who appears in Japanese mythology. At the event of Amano-Iwato "heavenly rock cave", Ame-no-tajikarao waited at the cave's door to pull out Amaterasu from the cave, and thus return light to the world.
Carved within the Bicchu Kagura tradition, this wooden mask represents Ame‑no‑Tajikarao, the deity of overwhelming physical strength who restored light to the world by pulling Amaterasu from the Heavenly Rock Cave. The sharply arched brows, intense gaze, and taut facial lines capture the decisive moment in which raw power and divine purpose converge. The carved planes of the cheeks and jaw convey concentrated force rather than anger, emphasizing Tajikarao’s role as a god of action and renewal. Textured hair elements and bold coloration enhance the mask’s ritual presence, grounding it in the dramatic vocabulary of folk performance. Within a collection or interior, the mask introduces a commanding, uplifting energy—its expression evoking strength, clarity, and the mythic return of light.
