Chochin(提灯 Lanterns) became widespread in Japan around the Edo period and were used for lighting.
Common people used animal or vegetable oils, while candles were luxury items at the time, used by the upper classes and in some pleasure quarters.
This chochin is called a Bajo-chochin. It was used with a long handle tucked into the waistband to keep both hands free while horseback riding(bajo 馬乗).
The handle is made of black lacquered wood, joined with brass fittings and wrapped in rattan. The tip is made of lacquered bamboo and is adjustable in length. The top features an umbrella-like cover to protect against rain, made of washi paper and lacquer.
The main body consists of a frame made of iron and wood, while the light-emitting section is made of bamboo and washi paper.
The patterns painted on the washi paper depict family crests and family names
