Item Description
三村陶伯 Mimura Touhaku (1929–)
Bizen Ware Flower Vase (Hanaire) — Presentation Piece, with Signed Wooden Box

This is a distinguished flower vase (hanaire) crafted in the authentic Bizen tradition by the celebrated potter Mimura Touhaku. The wooden storage box (tomobako) bears the inscription kenjō (献上) — designating this as a formal presentation piece created by the artist for gifting or dedication to a specific recipient — a mark that significantly elevates both its provenance and collectible value.

Formed entirely without glaze or painted decoration, the vessel achieves its visual richness solely through the transformative power of the anagama kiln — a hallmark of Bizen's uncompromising craft philosophy.
The surface presents a captivating interplay of natural kiln effects: warm reddish-brown hi-iro (fire color) tones emerge across the body, punctuated by passages of deep charcoal and rich amber where ash settled and fused during the extended firing. The dense, fine-grained clay body — characteristic of the iron-rich Inbe clay — lends the piece a quietly commanding presence, with a surface texture that rewards close examination: silky-smooth in some areas, subtly rough and organic in others.

The cylindrical form rises with quiet confidence, slightly tapering toward the mouth, creating an ideal proportion for displaying a single stem or a restrained floral arrangement in the Japanese ikebana tradition. The foot is cleanly trimmed, and the base bears the artist's impressed ceramic seal (tōin), affirming authenticity.

The tomobako is further inscribed in the artist's own hand with calligraphy and a personal seal — a highly prized feature that adds significant provenance and collectible value. This complete, signed presentation piece is a rare and serious collector's item.

Artist Profile
三村陶伯 Mimura Touhaku (1929–)
Mimura Touhaku was born in 1929 in Bizen City, Okayama Prefecture, the heartland of one of Japan's most ancient ceramic traditions. He trained under Living National Treasure Yamamoto Tōshū, mastering the demanding techniques of Bizen ware before establishing his own kiln in 1972. His works earned numerous prizes and selections at the Japan Traditional Crafts Exhibition (Nihon Dentō Kōgei Ten), one of the most prestigious juried craft exhibitions in Japan. His popularity was such that collectors would line up on kiln-opening days to acquire his work — a reputation that extended to his appearance on the nationally televised antiques appraisal programme Nandemo Kantei-dan (TV Tokyo, 2014). His pieces are distinguished by exceptional kiln effects and a deep, earthy vitality that embodies the authentic spirit of Bizen.
