COMPLETE SAMURAI ARMOR (Edo period)

This impressive complete samurai armor from the Edo period is an outstanding example of traditional craftsmanship, combining strong martial presence with refined aesthetics and a remarkable state of preservation. It comes with its original yoroi-bitsu storage box, decorated with a gold-painted family crest, as well as its outer leather protective cover, a rare surviving accessory used during transport and military campaigns.

KABUTO – Suji-bachi helmet with stylized antler wakidate

The helmet is a suji-bachi, made of multiple riveted plates lacquered in dark brown. The shape of the rivets and the curvature of the plates indicate skilled workmanship.

The kabuto is topped with a stylized kuwagata maedate (antler-shaped crest). These are not meant to resemble natural antlers but rather follow the abstract, symbolic style favored in Edo-period armor design.

The fukigaeshi display floral motifs and patinated lacquer, with orange cords and elegant wear consistent with genuine Edo-age materials.

MENPŌ – Face mask with lacquered yodare-kake

The menpō is a half-face mask lacquered in deep black.
The attached yodare-kake of horizontal lacquered plates remains intact and matches the cuirass perfectly.

DŌ – Lacquered cuirass with horizontal plates

The cuirass is constructed of horizontal lacquered plates in dark brown, bound with deep navy blue and white odoshi. The lacquer retains a beautiful, aged gloss.

SODE – Large shoulder guards with orange, white and blue odoshi

These sode show the vibrant orange-and-white lacework typical of more formal Edo armors, intended for both battle and ceremonial display.

KOTE – Armored sleeves with kusari and plates

The kote combine chainmail (kusari), lacquered plates and gold-colored reinforcements. Excellent condition overall.

Haidate and Suneate – Thigh and leg protection

The haidate continue the orange-white odoshi pattern.
The suneate feature lacquered brown plates with gilded elements and fur at the lower edges—an elegant and functional Edo-period detail.

Gunbai – Command fan with red cross

Included is a gunbai war fan, used by commanders.
It is lacquered in black and painted with a red cross, a symbol adopted by certain Edo forces to indicate leadership or unit identity. Its direct, functional style suggests real use.

Original storage box (Yoroi-bitsu) with leather cover

The armor comes with its original yoroi-bitsu, painted with a gold mon.
Additionally, the box is protected by an outer leather cover, a rare surviving accessory that significantly raises the historical and collector value of the set.

Overall evaluation

A powerful, visually striking armor with its original box, leather cover, gunbai, superb odoshi colors, and suji-bachi kabuto with stylized antlers.

A samurai armor that will be the central focus of any room where it is placed and that will delight any fan of Japanese art. This exclusive piece is making it an incredible opportunity for any collector of Japanese, war or simply historical art to get their hands on a piece that will attract attention wherever it is displayed, from offices, to private homes, offices or restaurants and will give a regal look to any place. The armour has gilded details that show the quality of the piece. The incredible workmanship accentuates such ornate pieces as the kabuto, the mempo and the Do. The stand to assemble it and the box are included. This armour is sure to delight any collector of Asian art and will be the focal point of any visitor's home, shop or office. There is a very ancient object and there are damaged by time and tears. There is a possibility that parts may have been added later or that restoration occurred. Due to the delicacy of continuous assembly and disassembly, returns are not allowed on old armor.
