Lunnitsas decorated with crosses represent an interesting example of cultural synthesis, particularly characteristic of the period of Christianization (11th–13th centuries), when pagan traditions blended with the new faith.
Originally, the lunnitsa was an ancient women's amulet in the shape of a crescent moon (a symbol of fertility, the moon, and femininity). The addition of a cross or cruciform ornament signified the unification of two belief systems, an attempt to combine pagan protective functions with Christian ones.
Connection to the Vikings (Scandinavians): Although lunnitsas are more often associated with Slavic culture, they were also common in Scandinavian circles during the Viking Age, especially in regions where there was active interaction.
During the transition to Christianity, the cross on the lunnitsa could serve as a sign of a "Christianized" amulet, which continued to be worn as jewelry, but with the addition of a symbol of the new religion.
