The anoxic seabed environment during the Ordovician prevented decomposition, while high concentrations of sulfides facilitated the replacement of trilobite exoskeletons with pyrite (fool’s gold) during fossilization.
This unique preservation process has allowed for the retention of incredible details, including antennae, appendages, and even eggs, making these fossils not only scientifically significant but also highly valuable among collectors.
