Historic Notes

This mask made in heavy wood has a jovial appearance accentuatd by the vivacity of its colourful pearls. This type of Bamoun maskes are worn on the top of the head, unlike most Bamileke face masks. A wooded soul is covered wutg a fabric that hugs the shale of the object, on which thouands of beads are glued, each color being endowed with a particular symbolysm in relation to the different chieddoms. The mustache and the ears have been covered with "Pe", a mixture of palm oil and padua woods, blood red wood, some of which are covered during the ceremonies of rejoicing and which after being grated, is keps in containers in carved wood. Slight cracks and abrasions. Within the territory of Cameroon's Grasslands live the Bamileke ethnic grorups (among other like Tikar, Anyand, Chamba and Widekum).
